What is paper wasp removal?

Reviewed by the Wasp Control Victoria team

Paper wasps chew wood fibre into a grey paper and build an open comb shaped like an upside down umbrella, hanging from a single stalk with no outer cover. You will find them on pergola beams, under eaves, on fence rails, clotheslines, letterboxes and inside hedges.

The wasps themselves are long and slender, orange brown or yellow and black, with legs that dangle when they fly. They leave your food alone but will defend the comb, and most stings happen when someone reaches into a shrub or pegs out washing.

Removal is short and simple: the comb is treated with a registered insecticide, left for a few minutes to work, then scraped off, bagged and taken with us.

Mud wasp nest removal: is it worth it?

Sometimes the honest answer is no.

One wasp, one nest

Mud wasps live alone. A female packs each cell with paralysed spiders for her young, and there is no colony to defend it.

Low sting risk

They rarely sting unless grabbed, so plenty of people simply leave the tubes where they are.

When to clear them

On doors, window tracks, outdoor furniture or a shed you use daily. Mud wasp removal takes a few minutes with a scraper.

How we charge

Free to scrape off while we are there for a paper wasp nest; on their own they are priced like a standard nest.

Your questions

Paper wasp removal FAQs

Count the combs you can see before you call. Paper wasps rarely stop at one.

What is the paper wasp nest removal cost?

Most paper nests are in the open and cost from $159 including GST. High ones are from $249 to $399, and several small ones are priced together.

Is paper wasp removal near me available outside Melbourne?

Yes. We book paper wasp jobs in regional towns as well as the city. Call with your postcode.

Do I need a paper wasp exterminator for a tiny nest?

Not always. A coin sized start can often be knocked down at dusk by someone who is not allergic. Anything larger or higher is worth a professional.

How painful is a paper wasp sting?

Very. They defend the comb hard, and a sting to the hand or face is common when people prune or peg out washing.

Do you do mud wasp nest removal?

Yes, when asked. Mud wasps are solitary and seldom sting, so we only remove the tubes if they are in your way.

Why do paper wasps keep building in the same spot?

Sunny, sheltered timber suits them. Checking those spots each spring keeps the nests small.

Are paper wasps the ones at my barbecue?

Usually not. Paper wasps hunt caterpillars. The wasps at your food are almost always European wasps.

How long does paper wasp removal take?

Most visits, including a check of the whole house, take under an hour.

Can you take a nest out of a hedge?

Yes. We treat it where it hangs first, then cut it out so nobody is stung later.

Is mud wasp removal messy?

No. The mud tubes come off with a scraper and the spot is wiped clean.

Is there cover after treatment?

Yes, six months on every paper nest we treat.
