What happens

Removing bees from wall cavities, explained

Reviewed by the Wasp Control Victoria team

A colony in a wall hangs its wax from the top plate between two studs and uses a weep hole, a vent or a cladding gap as its front door. We treat the bees at that door in the late afternoon, when the foragers are back.

A day or two later, once the traffic has stopped, we open the wall from whichever face causes least damage. That is often a strip of plaster in a wardrobe or behind furniture, sometimes a cladding board outside. All the wax comes out, the bay is cleaned and the entry is closed.

Chimneys follow the same pattern. The colony is treated, the wax is reached from the fireplace or the top of the flue, and a cap goes on so the next swarm cannot use it.

Room by room

Signs of bees in house wall spaces

How a colony gives itself away, depending on where you are in the house.

Bedroom

A low hum through the plaster at night, loudest on warm evenings.

Living room

A patch of wall that feels warm to the touch, even in cool weather.

Hallway

A dark, sticky stain or bubbling paint on the plaster or cornice.

Kitchen

Bees walking out of a power point, switch plate or downlight.

Outside

A tidy line of bees in and out of one weep hole or vent.

Anywhere

A sweet, waxy or slightly sour smell near one wall.

Chimneys

Bees in chimney removal

A lot of Victorian homes still have a fireplace nobody lights. Swarms love them.

Why a flue appeals

It is tall, dark and dry, with one narrow opening at the top: exactly what scouts look for.

Bee hive in chimney signs

Bees at the flue top on sunny days, dead bees in the grate, or a dark honey mark on the chimney breast.

Leave the fire unlit

Heat melts the wax and sends honey down the brickwork. Live bees can end up in the room.

Bee removal from chimney near me

We book chimney jobs across metro and regional Victoria. Chimney colonies start from $895 because of the height and the fiddly access at either end.

Bees in house wall FAQs

Tell us what is on the inside of the wall. It changes where we open and how tidy the finish is.

Call 0435 073 966
What does it cost to get bees out of a house wall?

A single storey wall cut out is from $495 including GST. Chimneys and upper storey walls start from $895. Patching is priced separately.

Can you remove bees from house walls without cutting in?

The bees can be treated from outside, but the wax cannot be removed. Wax left in the bay is what causes stains, smells and repeat colonies.

How do you remove bees from house wet areas?

To remove bees from house bathrooms and kitchens we usually open the other side of the wall or go in from outside, so no tiles are broken.

Why are bees coming out of a power point?

They are following the cable run from the colony in that wall. Keep the room shut and do not tape the outlet; call us.

Is bees in chimney removal different to a wall?

The steps are the same but the access is harder, so it is priced higher. The flue is capped afterwards.

Can I light the fire after a bee hive in chimney is removed?

Yes, once the wax is out and the flue has been checked. Burning with wax still inside can start a flue fire.

Will honey stain the plaster?

It can, especially in summer. Removing the wax soon after treatment is the best protection.

Do you fix the wall afterwards?

We close small openings ourselves. Bigger patches are priced separately or left for your own plasterer.

Do you do chimney and wall work in country Victoria?

Yes, across regional Victoria, including Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine and Geelong.

How long have the bees been in the wall?

The loudness, the staining and how long you have seen traffic all help us estimate it.

Is there cover after removing bees from wall cavities?

Yes. Every bay we clear and seal carries twelve months of cover on that seal.
