Why does European wasp removal need a pro?
Reviewed by the Wasp Control Victoria team
Vespula germanica arrived in Australia from overseas, and unlike our native paper wasps it keeps its nest out of view: in soil, retaining walls, compost heaps, wall cavities and roof spaces. Most people only meet the workers, usually at the barbecue, the bin or a can of soft drink, and never see the flight path home.
A disturbed nest defends itself in numbers, and each wasp can sting more than once. That is why poking, flooding or blocking a hole goes badly. The nest is treated through its entrance with a registered insecticide, early or late in the day, and the entrance is left open so every returning wasp picks up the treatment.
In a warm Victorian winter some nests keep going into a second year. Those overwintered nests can grow very large, which is one more reason to deal with them early.

Underground wasp nest removal
A hole in the lawn with wasps streaming in and out is the most common European wasp call we get.
Spotting one
Look for a small opening in turf or mulch with wasps landing and leaving every few seconds. Underneath, the comb can be bigger than a football.
How to remove ground wasp nest safely
Leave it to us. Kettles, fuel and rocks over the opening make things worse. We treat through the entrance and leave it open.
Ground wasp nest removal after care
Keep the mower, kids and pets away for the rest of the day. The traffic falls away over a few hours.
What it costs
A lawn or garden bed nest is a hidden nest, so it sits between from $249 and $399.

European wasp nest eradication: what not to do
European wasp nest eradication tends to go wrong the moment someone tries a garden tap, a spade or a household aerosol.
- 1Leave the opening clear. Wasps with a blocked exit dig a new one, sometimes into the house.
- 2Keep fuel and flame well away. Both are hazards and neither reaches the queen.
- 3Do not mow or whipper snip near the entrance.
- 4Ring 000 straight away for any sting followed by wheezing or a swollen face.

European wasp removal FAQs
Describe the feeding spot and the direction the wasps head. That is how we get to a hidden nest fast.
Call 0435 073 966What is the price of European wasp nest removal?
Because they are nearly always concealed, expect from $249 to $399. An exposed one, which is rare, is from $159.
Is European wasp extermination a risk to my dog?
Products are registered and applied as labelled. Keep dogs, cats and children off that patch until tomorrow and there is nothing to worry about.
How can I locate an underground wasp nest?
Stand still near where they feed and follow them with your eyes as they leave. Where they drop to the ground is usually the spot. Mark it from a distance.
Can I flood or plug the hole?
Please do not. Water and plugs rarely finish the nest and often send the wasps somewhere worse.
Is european wasp removal victoria wide, or Melbourne only?
State wide. Metro suburbs are usually a day or two away and country towns are served on set run days.
Why are there more European wasps in autumn?
Nests are at their largest and the wasps switch to hunting sugar, so they turn up wherever people eat outside.
Can a European wasp sting twice?
Yes, as often as it likes. Bees lose their sting; these wasps do not.
Do the nests die off in winter?
Usually, although a soft winter lets some survive and balloon in size the following season.
Do you dig the nest out?
No. It is treated through the entrance and left in the ground. Wall nests can be cut out on request, quoted separately.
Will wasp traps get rid of them?
Traps catch some workers but do not remove the nest. Treating the nest is what stops the traffic.
Can one visit fix a ground wasp nest?
In nearly every case. Our cover means a second trip for that nest costs nothing.
